If I see a psychologist, does that mean I’m crazy?

Counselling Psychologist in the Western Cape

If I see a psychologist, does that mean I’m crazy?

If you had an accident and you broke your leg, what would you do? You rush to the hospital emergency centre and you would see a doctor, right? The doctor will request X-rays and might refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon who will then decide whether or not you need to have an operation.

Did breaking your leg make you crazy? Were you scared to tell your friends that you were at the hospital? Of course, you weren’t! Part of your body was injured or became sick and you managed to find the right medical care to help make you well again. Your friends and family probably rushed over there to give you their support.

Your brain is the most fascinating organ in your body and regulates the natural creation of chemicals like adrenaline; and so much more. Your brain is responsible for how your whole body functions. If you don’t have a healthy mind, you won’t cope well with thoughts, emotions and actions. Your mind, which thinks and experiences emotions is also in the brain. You need to remember that the brain is a physical organ in your body, just like your heart or your lungs or kidneys. This means that, on occasion, your brain can also get sick. When there is a chemical imbalance in your brain, or the brain is damaged by illness or a violent accident, it may not function correctly. This is when you should search for a medical health professional such as Mike.

The root of all health is in the brain. The trunk of it is in emotion. The branches and leaves are the body. The flower of health blooms when all parts work together. ~Kurdish Saying

The first signs of needing help would be when your thoughts or emotions are completely different and very strong compared to the past. When you are really battling with making a life-changing decision such as which job to take or which spouse to marry – a psychiatrist can help calm the confusion to allow you to discover your true path.

Mental illness is a taboo subject and many people won’t admit they sought help. It’s really silly because they would have no problem going to an optometrist to have their eyes tested. They would have no problem letting all their friend know that they are sporting a brand new facelift or botox.

In short: No. You are not crazy if you see a psychologist. You are very mature to recognise that the problem is a little too big to solve on your own. You are wise to seek counsel from a professional psychologist who can help you get back to the person you want to be.

One more little challenge that might surprise you….

Ask a few of your friends at work or in your friendship circle, whether they’ve seen a therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist or life coach. I’m willing to bet that you will be surprised by how many hands go up.

When receiving psychological therapy it is always advisable if you can talk to a trusted family member or friend as you practice the coping methods that Mike will teach you in each session. Walking this path with a friend makes the journey easier.
