Is the Zoom Video platform safe to use for Therapy?

Yes, it is. Whilst there is little guidance in South Africa regarding which video platforms are safe to use for psychotherapy, the United States Health Insurance and Portability Accountability Act (HIPAA) does specify certain technical features that video platforms need to comply with for use by medical and mental health practitioners to ensure confidentiality and privacy. Certain platforms, such as Skype, Whatsapp and Facetime are not deemed to be compliant. Zoom is one of the approved software applications. Although the rules have been relaxed during the COVID-19 crisis and most platforms are currently being allowed, I feel strongly that your privacy and confidentiality are extremely important and Zoom provides an acceptable level of security. Zoom consultations are 256 bit AES encrypted using TLS 1.2. The platform needs a log in link (which I would send to you) and a meeting PIN (also sent to you and which should not be shared with any other person). In addition, when logging in you will enter a virtual waiting room and only I can permit anyone to enter the video meeting from the virtual waiting room. Once we are connected I lock the meeting so that no other persons can join our session.
Zoom is relatively simple to use and does not require you to purchase any software – it runs through your web browser. Only I need to purchase the software as the host. A free app is available for download for smartphones and tablets.
